What did happen after Dr Seuss's story "The Lorax" ended??
Three of our Yr 7 students Jennifer, Nicole and Caleb created this scenario for our readers. We hope you enjoy their creative ideas.

Oaklands School Careers Evening

Oaklands School Career evening on PhotoPeach

On Tuesday 3 August the Year 7 and 8s had been working on a project from Term 2. It was all about what career we wanted to have in future years. I personally would be a disc jockey(or DJ for short). Almost all the classes in the school came and the ones who didn't really missed out. It was a great afternoon and I think we all learned something from this experience.

Room 1 Year 7/8 Maths

The Year 7 and 8 students in Room 1 is are learning a lot in maths.

Most days we do ten quick questions. We solve problems about Area, Perimeter and Basic Facts. We use the text books and solve the problems on some pages.

Room 1 students do three maths activities each day, either the Cool Maths Games website, a lesson with the Teacher, Board games and Maths Activities e.g. Figure It Out books.

Sometimes the maths problems get so hard that we are allowed to use a calculator. The maths problems are mostly to do with Square Roots, Division and Decimals.

Mr Wethey's farewell

Unfortunately our Deputy Principal Mr Wethey has left. Mr Wethey was at Oaklands School for 25 years, that's ages!! He was a nice man and he helped me when I was hurt. He used to say "Howdy" all the time. He was funny and he was just one of a kind

Jump Rope For Heart

Jump Rope for Heart is a great fitness programme that our whole school has just completed. It began with each syndicate practising in their fitness time and then as a completion of it we had a jump off. Jump Rope for Heart was a really good event and was a lot of awesome fun.

Inquiry on Change

Oaklands Primary School students from Year 0-8 have been doing an Inquiry about Change. Our big question was "How can we bring about positive change at Oaklands School?"

We have five syndicates at our school: The Sparkles, Curious Comets, Rising Stars, Shooting Stars and Supernovas. In the Sparkles they have been making sand pit toys, the Curious Comets have been making playground equipment and the Rising Stars have made an outdoor classroom. The Shooting Stars have planted trees for the names of our houses (Miro, Rimu, Kowhai and Rata) they have also made friendship seats, healthy lunches and classroom boardgames

The Supernovas have been making new equipment that could possibly be made on the school field or in other places in the school. We have made models, brochures and we have designed models on the computer as a replica of real life objects using a program called Google Sketch-up.

Big Buddies

As a Year 7 and 8 at Oaklands School, we take on many leadership roles. Big Buddies is one of them.

A Big Buddy is assigned to a little buddy to look after. The little buddies are the new entrants in our school. We play games and read books with them and check if they are playing nicely at lunch times.

We take photos and make a folder about our buddy's first year at school! This programme helps the new entrants settle into school.

Mrs Dawe's Farewell

Earlier this term Mrs Dawe left Oaklands School to go to Hagley High School to teach. Most kids were upset at the event and Molly (Yr 3) did a Scottish dance at her farewell assembly. We will all miss Mrs Dawe.
We wish her good luck for her new job.

Push Play Filming

This morning, the 30th June, a group of people came to Oaklands School from the Push Play TV programme to film some students. The Halswell School Basketball team came to play against the Oaklands basketball team. Of course, Oaklands won 20/14. That same group of students from Halswell school stayed until 11:30. A group of Oaklands students, including me, had to stand out in the icy cold winds for about 1 hour. It was freezing, so we were glad when it was our turn to be filmed doing one of the three activities. We could choose rugby kicks, soccer target hitting or netball throwing. I chose netball. When it was time to go back to our classrooms, I couldn't feel my fingers!
Watch Push Play on Saturday mornings at 8.00am on TV3.
